A Time to Break Silence explores images that situate themselves where ideologies diverge and society shifts. This thematic exhibition begins with dynamic Show More...documents from the permanent collection, including photographs from Ed Eckstein's celebrated Coming of Rage series and New Hope photographer Jack Rosen's images of a changing society in southeastern Pennsylvania. It further explores regional contemporary perspectives that expand our understanding of the pressing social issues of our time.
To exhibit a work of art is not to endorse the work or the vision, ideas, and opinions contained within. The works that a museum exhibits may awe, illuminate, challenge, unsettle, confound, provoke, and, at times, offend. This exhibition contains some photography with complicated social content and we advise that younger visitors be accompanied by an adult. We welcome public discussion, with the belief that such dialogue is integral to the experience of the art.
Museum hours: Tuesday-Friday 10 AM-4:30 PM Saturday 10 AM-5 PM & Sunday 12 PM-5 PM. ...Show Less

Peter Hurd (1904-1984) and Henriette Wyeth (1907-1997) were important contributors to the arts of both the Philadelphia region and the Southwest. Peter Show More...Hurd, a native of Roswell, attended Haverford College, near Philadelphia and later studied with N.C. Wyeth in Chadds Ford. While there, he met Wyeth's eldest daughter, Henriette, a talented painter whose lyrical large scale canvases had quickly earned her critical recognition following her graduation from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. The two were married in 1929, and-torn by ties to both the east coast and the southwest-relocated permanently to New Mexico in 1937. There, both artists were rebranded as Regionalists, a characterization that marginalized their respective contributions to American art.
Co-organized with the Roswell Museum and Art Center in New Mexico, Magical & Real is the first joint retrospective of Wyeth and Hurd's work since 1967, and the first scholarly exhibition to seriously consider the work of either artist in thirty years. The exhibition re-situates Hurd and Wyeth into the larger dialogue of American art in the 20th century, with the aim of broadening awareness of the entire scope of their work while grappling with the tensions that exist between the eastern and western arts communities. It will also reintroduce audiences familiar only with the name Wyeth to the significant body of work produced by the woman that Andrew Wyeth felt was the most talented of all N.C. Wyeth's children.. ...Show Less
